![]() Hoffmann is nearly 1,000 ft higher, so you can see further. ![]() The view from CR is much closer to Half Dome and has the dramatic experience of crossing the arête and the deep views into Tenaya Canyon and Yosemite Valley. They both have expansive, "top of the world" 360* views. If you take the trail to May Lake, yes it will be longer but you can camp in the backpacker's area of the May Lake HSC, so your hike for that particular day could end up being shorter. Last consideration: if you take Murphy Creek there won't be any legal camping until you are down to and across Tioga Rd and well up the Sunrise trail (which starts with a climb of about 1,000 ft). When you get to Tioga Rd cross it and turn left, you'll come to the Sunrise trailhead after about 1/4-1/2 mile. Back on the trail you'll come out at the May Lake parking lot, continue from there down the old road that start off east and then bends south, that goes to Tioga Rd between Tenaya Lake and Olmsted Point and has some nice views along the way. Hoffmann, you still can get great views from near the HSC - right as you are leaving the HSC, you will have just passed the tent cabins on your left and the backpacker's outhouse on the right, the trail starts heading down and there is a low ridge to the left, climb up that ridge and you will have great views of CR, Half Dome, the Clark Range, and the Cathedral Range. So if you go to May Lake and don't want to climb Mt. But keep in mind it's another 1,700 ft elevation gain above May Lake, steep, and starting at pretty high altitude. Hoffmann, which has views at least as good as CR (some would say better). Or, the trail to May Lake is longer, continues climbing (and keep in mind you've already been climbing steadily since Glen Aulin), but you get to visit very pretty May Lake and if you're up for it you can climb to the top of Mt. When it brings you to Tioga Rd cross the road and turn to the right, hike along the shore of Tenaya Lake until you reach the end where you can pick up the Sunrise trail. Eventually you will come to a signed fork in the trail, the Murphy Creek trail spurs off to your left and goes straight to Tenaya Lake, or continue on the trail to May Lake.īetween the two, Murphy Creek is shorter, pretty much all downhill from that junction down to Tioga Rd, and I don't believe any views. As you keep climbing the views behind you (to the north) will begin to open up, so be sure to turn around and look back frequently. You'll pass McGee Lake (nothing special there). Both choices involve taking the trail from Glen Aulin towards the 10 Lakes trail and May Lake. The bridge across the Tuolumne River is fine, it's only the last bridge that gets you into the HSC proper that is down.įrom there to CR, you only really have two choices unless you go way out of your way. First off, you should know that the bridge to Glen Aulin HSC is still down, and it probably won't be back up this whole season, so you'll have to ford Conness Creek.
